This was mine. Sue Generis, though they changed their name to Dropping Daylight so as not to be confused with another band called Sui Generis. They were amazing and had a ton of energy. There couldn'thave been more than 100 people there. On of the guys on the band cut himself on his guitar strings and got a band-aid from someone in the crowd. They opened for...

Allister. Very much enjoyed andstill one of my absolute favorites. There may have been other bands there that day but I don't remember them if there were. The guy with the red shirt and big hair also played in August Premier.

It really depends on the show you go to. I think my first was $12 and I've never spent more than $40. But I don't go to big, super famous bands so that's definitely a part of it.

My parents tell me I once went to a Peter Paul and Mary concert with them sometime in the late 1990s/early 2000s. Unfortunately, toddler me fell asleep during that concert. I again went to see them a few years ago, with just Peter and Paul after Mary passed away. Good concert.

And then two years ago, I went to see this lot. Go figure.

Little Swedish band called Graveyard. Me and my cousin drove 3.5 hours, got lost in Chicago rush hour traffic, and ended up with a parking ticket to see these dudes. So worth it, they blew the fucking roof off the House of Blues starting with this song as their set opener.

For ashow that big you might as well just watch it on TV. And if you're going to watch it on TV you're just there for the music. And if you're just there for the music you might as well listen to a recording because most bands sound like shit live, especially in big places like that.

Nothing wrong with going with your mom. I would go with mine if we could stand each other's music. I have friends who have gone with their parents to music festivals. They would cut the lights and shoot sparks into the audience by sticking an angle grinder into their instruments. The music was great for getting pumped up and moshing. 924 Gilman was a fun place to see shows like this because it was all ages / no alchohol / no drugs / no violence / no racism, so you wouldn't get drunk morons starting fights. They had a "no sellout" policy but a lot of popular bands started there like Green Day or Operation Ivy.

Silverchair at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas.

Some friends (a couple, who we referred to collectively as "Jimpala" since they were basically already married in high school) has a line on four tickets, and wanted to go with some friends. All our other friends either weren't interested or backed out, but I was down with seeing them. We had one ticket left over, so I got the go-ahead to invite this girl I was crushing on (we'll call her Jennifer) to come hang w/ us. It was an overnight trip, and we rented a couple rooms at one of the hotels there, i think it was Medieval Times.

Anyway, the evening of the show, we head out. Jimpala took off early, I was about an hour behind. I pick up Jennifer in my mom's burgundy 94 Taurus, and we cut the back way across the desert, windows down on a temperate spring evening, via Amboy Rd, old Route 66, Kelbaker Rd. & Hwy 40 - a beautiful tour of the desert and some of the most open, empty roads you can imagine; a route I'd traveled many times as a kid, and would travel again many times in the future. The sun was at our backs, low on the horizon, giving the world that typical desert glow of golden light and a cast of sky-blue pink, and the shadow of our car stretched out long ahead of us. We'd turn northward, and my passenger's face was illuminated with that honey-colored light and when she'd pull her dark, wind-blown hair back from her face, I was struck dumb and had a hard time watching the road ahead.

As it turns out the concert was completely forgettable. It started about 2 hours late, as the lead singer had to sober up enough to get out on stage, there was no opening act, and instead we two-thousand-or-so patrons all stood crammed into a chairless room, watching an X-Games trailer on loop on two low-quality screens on either side of the stage. Then they only played for an hour and a half, without encore.

Jennifer and I stayed up all night talking, sharing poetry; she sat there curled up in a chair smoking - and she had that sexy way of smoking, too. For some people, smoking is an unforgivable sin, a deal-breaker, and for the most part it's not something I find attractive - I'm not a smoker, and having lived with smokers, it presented itself as more of a nuisance than anything. But some people smoke, and the WAY they smoke, the body language of their smoking, the way they relish a cigarette... these are the people that keep smoking alive, because they look so goddamn good doing it.

I never made a move on her. I wanted to, but I was so intimidated, and so bashful at that age. I think she was hoping I would. Or maybe I'd like to think that's what she wanted...

From what I recall hearing, the lead singer had a pretty heavy heroin habit around that time. Money and fame and access...

I mean, their music was good on the albums. They were a decent band. This concert tho, just didn't do them justice at all.

Thanks for reading all that, I know it was way longer than it needed to be. I'm not a writer but i've always had aspirations to be one.
